Equine influenza outbreak in The Netherlands

23/12/2018 – The Equine Industry Council of the Netherlands has announced that a significant number of bigger and smaller stable has been infected with equine influenza, especially in the south and the middle of the Netherlands. Equine influenza has various strains. The strain circulating at the moment not only seems to infect horses that have not been vaccinated or that have not been vaccinated properly, but can also infect properly vaccinated horses. The urgent advice from the Council is to isolate the stables that are facing an outbreak of the virus and to have a vet confirm the diagnosis by examining horses with fever using a nose swab. Equine influenza is more contagious that rhino pneumonia because the virus is stronger an can easily spread by air over some distance.
